What is Actos?

Actos is an oral diabetes medicine used to treat Type 2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes.  It is sometimes used in combination with other medicines, but it is not used to treat Type 1 diabetes.  Pioglitazone is the active ingredient in Actos and is also used in ActoPlus met, ActoPlus met XR, Competact and Duetac.

In 2010, more than 2.3 million prescriptions for Actos were issued in the United States.   Actos is considered a top selling drug.

Recent studies have shown Actos can lead to serious injuries such as an increased risk of bladder cancer.  The studies show the risk of bladder cancer increases with higher dosages and prolonged treatment with Actos.

Actos Linked to Bladder Cancer

Takeda, Inc.  manufactures the drug.   Actos, along with various combination therapy regiments that incorporate Actos, have been used to treat Type 2 Diabetes since 2000.   During pre-market studies, cancer occurred in animal test subjects and was known to regulatory agencies and Takeda, Inc.

On June 15, 2011, the FDA issued a health warning that uses of the diabetes drug Actos for more than one year may be associated with increased risk of bladder cancer.  The FDA added that warnings must be attached to the drug packaging and marketing materials.  However, the drug still remains on the market.

The FDA recommended that doctors should not use Actos (pioglitazone) in patients with active bladder cancer and use caution with patients with a prior history of bladder cancer.  The FDA says it will continue to evaluate the data from the ongoing study.

Recall in Europe

Europe has had a different approach based on the studies.   Results of a recent epidemiological study conducted by France caused France to pull Actos from the shelves.  Germany has recommended its doctors do not prescribe Actos to new patients.
