What is Celexa?

Celexa (Citalopram) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. Celexa is a popular anti-depressant and is prescribed to patients with various levels of anxiety or depression. Most common treatments for Celexa include major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, ADHD, PMDD and Body dysmorphic disorder.

Recent scientific studies have shown that Celexa increases the risk of birth defects when taken before or during pregnancy. These birth defects include life threatening heart defects such as Septal as well as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).

History of Celexa

In the United States, Forest Labs manufacturers and markets the drug Celexa. It failed to warn of the potential birth defects this drug can cause. As of early 2011, the Celexa prescription warning label does not include information regarding an increased risk of birth defects for women taking the drug during pregnancy.
