What is Prozac?
Prozac (Fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. Prozac is a popular anti-depressant and is prescribed to patients with various levels of anxiety or depression. Recent scientific studies have shown that Prozac increases the risk of birth defects when taken before or during pregnancy. These birth defects include life threatening heart defects such as Septal as well as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).
History of Prozac
Eli Lilly and Company is the original manufacturer of Prozac. It failed to warn of the potential birth defects this drug can cause. As of early 2011, the Prozac prescription warning label does not include information regarding an increased risk of birth defects for women taking the drug during pregnancy.
