A recent study has linked the use of Seroquel (Quetiapine) to an unacceptable rate of diabetes. Data from this study showed that patients on Seroquel had a significantly higher number of incidences of diabetes than those on older drugs. The problem is that Astra Zeneca was aware that Seroquel caused a high occurrence of diabetes, but failed to warn doctors or patients in the United States. They did, however, warn the doctors in Japan because of strict governmental control over the drug industry. However, they did not see fit to warn doctors in the United States because they did not have to. Furthermore, to boost sales of Seroquel, Astra Zeneca is accused of aggressively marketing and promoting Seroquel for “off-label” use that was beyond its FDA approval. This means Seroquel was prescribed to patients who had an illness that Seroquel was not approved to treat. Furthermore, AstraZeneca is accused of illegally offering incentives to doctors and other medical professionals in an effort to increase the number of Seroquel prescriptions that were written. |
