What is Tylenol 3?
Tylenol 3 is made with acetaminophen and codeine and is available in both brand name and generic name Vopac. It is a commonly prescribed painkiller and classified as an opioid painkiller. Pregnant women have been prescribed this Tylenol with Codeine. A recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control found that opioid based pain killers containing the drug codeine may double a baby’s risk for birth defects.
Treatment with Tylenol 3 with codeine was linked to several types of congenital heart defects as well as spina bifida, hydrocephaly, congenital glaucoma and gastroschisis (herniation of the abdominal wall). Many infants with congenital heart defects die in the first year of life, and infants who survive require numerous surgeries, lengthy hospitalizations and a lifetime of treatment for related disabilities. Taking drugs containing Codeine during the first trimester can more than double the risk of giving birth to a child with a preventable birth defect.

History of Tylenol 3 and opioid painkillers
Until recently, Tylenol 3 and other opioid pain killers have been considered safe for use during pregnancy. Johnson & Johnson is the original manufacturer of Tylenol 3 with Codeine. It failed to perform any study to determine the risks posed to a fetus during pregnancy. Many people don’t realize that the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) does not perform tests on pharmaceutical drugs. Because of this, drug companies have a duty to disclose all of the risks known about the drug they are marketing.
