What is Vicodin?

Vicodin is made with acetaminophen and hydrocodone and is available in both brand name and generic.  It is a commonly prescribed painkiller and classified as an opioid painkiller. Pregnant women have been prescribed Vicodin.  A recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control found that opioid based pain killers containing the drug hydrocodone may double a baby’s risk for birth defects.    

Treatment with Vicodin with hydrocodone was linked to several types of congenital heart defects as well as spina bifida, hydrocephaly, congenital glaucoma and gastroschisis (herniation of the abdominal wall).  Many infants with congenital heart defects die in the first year of life, and infants who survive require numerous surgeries, lengthy hospitalizations and a lifetime of treatment for related disabilities. Taking opioid drugs containing hydrocodone during the first trimester can more than double the risk of giving birth to a baby with a preventable birth defect.
